Choosing a w-space system to live in

If you’re going to move to w-space, you first need to find an unoccupied system. How should you should you choose the system class to live in?

So you’re going to move from k-space to reside in a w-space system.

The first thing to do is to determine what’s your target system class. There are 2 variables to take into account when choosing a home w-space system:

  • the system class you’re going to live in
  • the class of the systems you’re going to make money out of them

Class 1 systems are the easiest to plex, and usually a battlecruiser is enough, even soloing.

Class 2 and 3 can be considered easy, and both can be soloed, although class 3 require a well fitted T3 cruiser.

Class 4 to 6 are more difficult, and at least a fleet of T3 cruiser with remote repair is needed – a capital ship is a distinctive advantage.

In my opinion the best compromise between simplicity and profitability is the class 3 – you can make up to 100m per hour, and soloing is possible, although clearing a complex can take up to 30 minutes.

Do not live in the same system you want to make money from

Many people tend to make no distinction between the system class they’re going to live in and the system class they’re going to plex: “I want to make isks in a class 3 system, I choose to live in a class 3 system”. I think this is a bad choice, because if you are going to make money in the same system you live in, you’ll soon run out of sites because of the low respawn rate.

A better choice is to choose the system to live in basing on the static connection it has. If you want to make isks in class 3 systems, choose a system to live in having a static connection to class 3 systems. A static connection means at any time there is a wormhole leading to a random system, but always of the same class. When the wormhole collapses, a new wormhole spawns, leading to a different system, but still of the same class.

When in the connected system there are no more resources, simply wait for the wormhole to collapse or just manually collapse it so that a new one immediately spawns to another system, hopefully full of sites to plex.

Choose the class to live in

Once it’s clear why it’s better not to live in the same system you plan to make money from, the class of the system you are going to reside can be chosen basing on 3 different variables:

  1. static connection
  2. direct exposure to k-space
  3. system class

The static connection is more a constraint than a variable: if you want to make money plexing class 3 systems, you need a system having a static connection to systems of that class.

The direct exposure to k-space is often seen as an advantage, but in my opinion it’s a big disadvantage: you will have a lot of visitors in your home system, along with a lot of troubles. This is the reason why my corporation resides in a class 4 system having a static connection to C3 only. 99.9% of C3 systems have a static connection to k-space, so at any time my home system is 2 jumps away from k-space. It doesn’t matter if on average 70% of times the k-space exit leads to lowsec and 20% only to highsec (with remaining 10% to nullsec) – with some logistics and a good planning trips to k-space are not needed on a daily basis.

One important thing to take into account is that a k-space exposure means a static connection – so 2 static connections are needed: one to the chosen w-space system class and one to k-space. Needless to say, systems with 2 or more static connection are much less frequent than systems with 1 static connection only. So, be ready to pay a lot of isks if you’re gonna buy it, or to spend a lot of time exploring before finding the right one.

Once you choose the static connection and whether you want a direct exposure to k-space or not, you can choose the class of the system to seek for, which will soon become your new home.

Class 5 and 6 are dangerous from different point of views, first of all is that capital ships can jump through their wormholes, which means more chances to watch your POS being destroyed by a fleet of battleships and dreadnoughts.

In lower classes capital ships cannot enter (they can only be built in system), so they are ideally safer – that doesn’t prevent a fleet of 20 battleships to take your POS down.

Class 1-3 systems will have a lot of visitor, either occasional pilots from k-space looking for some isks or w-space residents from other systems. What makes them appetible is that they are not difficult, so attractive for many occasional solo pilots and small fleet.

Class 4 systems:

  • cannot be soloed (unless you have 5 tengu enabled alts), so it’s not the best target for occasional visitors.
  • usually don’t have static connections to k-space, again meaning less occasional visitors
  • don’t allow capital ships to enter, because of wormhole max mass limitation, so ideally less troubles

So in my opinion if you’re going to move to w-space either in a one man corp or a small/medium sized corp, choose a class 4 system to live in, having a static connection to the system class you want to make money from, most likely a C3, but C2 and C1 as good alternatives.
